Group Therapy: Mental Distress in a Digital Age: A visual response workshop
Tuesday 10 October
UNSW Art & Design (Elwyn Lynn Conference Centre)
FREE (booking required)
Group Therapy: Mental Distress in a Digital Age is an exhibition that explores connections between mental health and the technologies that we use every day. Many people have argued that constant use of smartphones, laptops and internet enabled technology is making us more anxious. On the other hand, there are many examples of technology that supports positive mental health and helps people to alleviate social isolation.
We are interested in understanding how people with an interest in art, science and psychology respond to the Group Therapy exhibition. The visual matrix is a new research technique that we are applying to test this question. We are currently looking for people to join us for an audience feedback session on the exhibition.
Over the course of 45 minutes, participants will then engage in a process of generating images and associations related to their experience of the exhibition. You will be seated throughout, engage with other participants and be encouraged to provide verbal associations of your exhibition experience, if and when you are comfortable speaking.
No direct questions will be addressed to you and you are not obliged to speak at any point. The visual matrix will be audio recorded. Following this there will be a short break and a second session lasting no more than an hour where participants will be asked to consider the images and associations generated by the group in a discussion. Optional five-minute ‘exit interviews’ with individual participants will take place at the end of the process.
Our research team will analyse the material that we have recorded. Anonymised excerpts will be used for further research and publication including conference and journal articles.
If you are interested in participating please contact email@example.com for more information.
